Revision as of 11:02, 19 May 2012

The majority of your opponents come in the shape of an NPC; so someone who isn't a player. These come in ALL shapes and sizes, from eel, to scurvy to random ball of metal; all of which you can attack by landing on top of them. Killing NPCs gives you skills, helps you complete missions and some NPCs also drop goods which you can pick up and use (most of all, killing NPCs gives you a sense of BRAVADO), but they do fight back, so make sure you have the right skills before tackling each one. You can get a good idea of what you can and can't take a chunk out of by reading this wiki, talking to older players and (somewhat riskily) giving them a poke yourself.
Whatever oddities you face though, just make sure you kill them in style.

Spawned critters inherit the properties of their parents.
More then just ambush/block.

INFO GATHERED WITH ENG/WEAP AROUND 30

NPCs can be stronger, or weaker than it's average stats. So if you're just barely able to handle a certain beastie.. be careful. The next one you face may be his stronger brother.

It is unknown to what degree they can be stronger or weaker, but it definitely differs by NPC. The max is believed to be 25%.

Shields regenerate every 30 seconds.

Space Eel

space_eel_x256.png

"My word. Have you ever seen anything so repulsive?"
Those were the reputed words of Elk Wilson himself when he stepped out the shower onto one of these. Indiginous to space, these creatues vary widely in size and strength but are more than able to deliver a stinging bout of slime when they feel threatened. Despite this, they're recommended as the basic foodstuff for the newcomer's appetite for killing things. As with earth, they can be considered "MOSTLY HARMLESS"
Found most abundantly in sector Terra (4).

Bulgur

bulgur_x256.png
There's nothing like a grilled Bulgur after a hard day's work. Not that you'd want to eat it, it's just quite unique.
The 'Bulgur' (so called because it... bulges) is a mindless creature (literally) which spends it's days soaking in the sun. Driven solely by the primitive urge to get the perfect tan, it's unfortunate that these creatures are in fact allergic to sunlight. They're bulging nature is due to their bodies having an extreme allergic reaction and turning all energy absorbed into puss (interestingly, their actual size without the reaction is that similar to a raisin). Thus, when the young pilot decides to try out a bulgur, they can be sure to get an easy and satisfying explosion... If not slightly disgusting.

Interstellar Larva

interstellar_larva_x256.png
I said "attack the larva" not "attack the lava."-- Xavier Rolands, Word Power
This creature represents a great opportunity to practice your diction. Get it right and you'll have an easy time of things. Get it wrong and you'll be plunging your ship into a pool of magma. To be fair though, the pyrotechnic show of your ship exploding is much more satisfying than washing larva goo of the the windshield.

Echinochloa

echinochloa_x256.png
"Echinochloa", the guy said for my lawn. What do I get? A leg, arm and spleen missing, minus three children and my entire stock of vintage 'knitted socks.'
Evolution took a little break during the development of the Echinochloa (If you're wondering, it had a few 'Nice' biscuits, several crackers with brie and a small Guinea-Pig, slowly roasted over a spit), which one day developed intelligence, emotions and long tentacley things which don't make good seafood all spontaneously. The donkies in the yard in which they first developed were quite surprised by this. People were even more surprised when the grass species developed interstellar unaided existance 4 minutes later, something still as of yet undeveloped for primates.
Fortunately for us, after the war of the humped billboard, the latest generation has been subject to horrific parenting and don't quite understand how to feed themselves. Thus, they're a relatively easy kill for younglings.

Space Eel Mother

space_eel_mother_x256.png

"Yum?"
Slightly more meaty than their spawn, when Elk Wilson stepped on one of THESE, aesthetics were the last thing on his mind. Quite how he stepped on one is another matter. The space eel mother is, as expected, a slightly tougher nut to crack (or make splat in satisfying ways in this case) but shouldn't be shied away from by any means. As Elk himself says: "Give 'em a poke and see what happens."
Just... Not good for eating.

Rogue Pirate

rogue_pirate_x256.png

"OAAAAAARRRR"
Captain Paddle was the pioneer of space pirating. He didn't have an eye patch or a beard. In fact he was the most disappointing pirate the galaxy has known and so was included in public circles. In fact, it's hard to find any evidence that he did anything illegal at all... Unfortunately for we noble travelers, the luckless individuals who have lost their way and are classified as 'Rogue Pirates' aren't quite as unrecognizable. They WILL have your guts for garters but give it a couple of weeks and you should be able to take them down. Unfortunately, they're both dead hard to find (almost always cloaked) and dead poor (so very dead) and it's a bit of an anti-climax when you find a couple of tonnes of light ore in their smouldering wrecks. Pirates. Gr.
Probably most common in sector: Valence (5, with the possibility of them all sharing the same tile) or Narokan (at least 5)

Sentry Drone

sentry_drone_x256.png

*Sigh* "Not again."
If sentry drones could talk, I'm fairly sure this phrase would rank fairly highly in vocabulary commonly used by them - they are a VERY easy kill. Left behind from the great tiddly-wink war of '52, they were used to protect high-ranking generals. However, these drones quickly and suddenly found themselves unemployed when they didn't notice the enemy walk past them during lunchtime. With nothing left to protect, they spend their days muttering insults to the nearest nearby creature; when no-one's looking, of course.

"If you eat a SEW, you'll be quite unwell" OLD PORK PROVERB
From fins to pincer-type things, clearly a beak is immediately the thing that comes to mind when you think of the next stage in evolution for an eel. Funnily enough, these aren't steps up in evolution, but different classes of the same animal - in this case, the pelican.
Well as they say, you learn something new everyday!
These come somewhere between rogue pirate and master pirate in difficulty. But watch out because they seem to drain your health without you noticing...

Master Pirate

master_pirate_x256.png

"Only 1 thing is worse than a pirate: 2 pirates."
That famous proverb sums up the master pirate. Think ye of a rogue pirate and times it by two and a bit and: Voila. Happyjoy, we arrive at the 'master pirate.' These 'pesky rascals' have sussed that sitting there waiting to get attacked isn't the most successful tactic. These 'blighters' go even as far as ambushing! I know; what has the world come to? On the bright side, once you get to their level though, their spoils are much more satisfactory than their predecessors.

Vorpal Fang

vorpal_fang_x256.png

"Your face looks like a Vorpal Fang"
Oh. Oh. The sweet scent of nostalgia. Who hasn't been called a Vorpal Fang on the virtual playground? Mmmmm... Aside from that, according to Pork Mythology, Vorpal Fangs were the foot mould of the great giant Daisy Boo. 1 thing's for sure, spraying them with obnoxious chemicals won't do you a lot of good - once they hold on, they don't let go (well, to an extent - it'd be pretty silly if it held on for ETERNITY). Yeah. Not comfort killing for beginners, but good practise once you can handle rogue pirates with ease.
A pair of these are found in many sectors, for example in Centic, Corona and Terra.

Anemone

The Lahst Thingh Iy Sor Beefor Geting Wolfd Woz An Anemonee Eeting Mie Crab DOUGLAS HADAMS' 'THE DAY I TRIED PEASE PUDDING'
Ah, who hasn't read that classic novel? Back before spelling was invented, the Anemone was a most feared poodle. Named after a type of marine flaura from some little-heard-of planet, it would go out at night (well... the space equivalent, which was when the Kudu practised that intriguing art of 'Sun swallowing') and attack passing vessels with prams (as in hitting them with buggies - squealing children and all). The trauma left many an unflinching, war-hardened veteran tucking in to bushels of banana croutons to drown out their misery the addictive foodstuffs with their crunchy yet... surprisingly flavoursome aromas. Since then though, Kudus have become a lot rarer, and prams have stopped being mass-produced. In the face of such events, the Anemone has since fallen into insignificance. Still, they provide a nice distraction to kill for pilots who are beginning to find rogue pirates child's play (since most of them are children, this comes as no surprise).

Interstellar Wasp

interstellar_wasp_x256.png

"I'd rather be a wasp than eat vegetables"
Needless to say, President Brian McDuh was a bit... questionable. McDuh declared war on vegetables back in the year of the Small Grunting Crisp Packet and greengrocers have never fully recovered since - Especially due to constant raids from these beasties. Interstellar Vegetable Consuming Wasps (or more commonly known as just 'Intersteller Wasps') are particularly fond of courgettes - causing much controversy over whether they actually are a vegetable or not. Clearly, such petty arguments are irrelevant when you're confronted with one of these. I think McDuh would recommend a wee bit of practice before waving a carrot in front of this insect.

Space Jelly

space_jelly_x256.png

"Not for eating."
The space jelly is in fact related to a branch of the canine family. How it made this tranformation from its original species is... quite a mystery. A pain to find and a pain to kill except for intermediates and above, space jellies have been likened to jelly babies in that when they are put in a warm test tube of potassium chlorate, they fizz, smell and make noises in much the same manner. Also... They both have 'jelly' in their titles (You can count McDUH for that astute observation - this won him the Nobel Prize for Physiology).
Present only in Alberdaran and Coaliside and Keidos.

Spectral Wisp

spectral_wisp_x256.png

"You don't want to pick on me. I'm related to a smidgen of semi-transparent energy"
The seventh emperor of Pork, after successfully establishing his throne through questionable means, definitely had a point. This is yet another creature which has stirred debate amongst those with nothing better to do. Some say this lifeform is in fact reminiscent of the dead and its trans-dimensional nature makes it hazy round the edges... Others say that that it's the result of an immensely profitable remote ISP that somehow lost its way in the realms of cyberspace... And others still demand that it actually refers to colourful men who hunt small birds.
However all this isn't really important - all you need to know is that they're not suitable for small children (or for that matter, big ones).

Space Monkey

"So err... Where did the suit come from?"
That, is the greatest second greatest unsolved mystery known to philosophers to date but some speculate that it is in fact the next step in the evolutionary cycle for us. However attempts to communicate don't go very far as the pulses emitted by the monkey are detrimental to the structural integrity of most ships (quite how this works in a vacuum I'm not sure...) and no instruments can yet get past this rather curious barrier in communication. Needless to say, if you've fresh earned your wings, speaking to this buckoe should NOT be at the top of your list (let alone nabbing his 'nana).

Slurg

slurg_x256.png

"I don't like Abe." Slurg motto.
Slurgs are in fact disfunctional spores from the ear mould of Kudus (yes, they have ears). Unlike conventional spores, they have no perceivable role - being both useless for reproduction and aggravating allergies. Like other USBs (useless sentient beings), they can be used to efficiently transmit data and energy through vintage PCs. They also make excellent seafood. From space.
They are, however, a slightly tougher nut to crack than their cousin the anemone (both if you're trying to eat them (removing the shell is best) and just attacking one for the sake of it) and are prone to killing you if you attack them. So, behave.

Krill

krill_x256.png

Quote
The Krill would be, in fact, relatively harmless by itself... unfortunately, natural selection decided that the Krill wasn't pretty enough by itself, so it developed a species whose sole habitat was the Krill's jaws. The 'Wetfishpig,' a dangerous creature that originated on those famous Narokun beaches floats aimlessly through space until it finds a Krill... On discovery, it immediately inhabits its mouth and consumes everything that the Krill floats into; far from enjoying the experience, the Krill has to live on nothing but... Let's not go there. Commonly mistaken for teeth, the Wetfishpig has alarming flexibility and is prone to retreat holds and any new pilots shouldn't think about poking them until much later on (and it's nice to ask permission from the Krill first before blowing it up).

Cephalopod

cephalopod_x256.png
"I was never a fan of molluscs; least of all molluscs from the sea.", KEVIN McDUH.
Kevin was Brian's sister.
Cephalopods have changed (if only slightly) since their days slaving on earth. Whether their gills process photons or dissolved oxygen in the sea though, the important thing to note when encountering these creatures is the LARGE-TENTACLEY-SUCKERY-THINGS-WHICH-WILL-DEVOUR-YOU abbreviated to 'Blowholes' (intrigued readers may want to take note that the technical term nowadays for the creature's arsenal is in fact 'The Biscuit Tins' ever since spelling was re-invented by the Bourbonites of Birmingham back in '93... But 'blowholes' makes a lot more sense).
They're not very nice on the whole - so don't go poking one (unless it looks particularly lonely, in which case it would be the loving, Christian and traumatic thing to do).

Kudu

kudu_x256.png
Quote
Kudus are scary. They can eat just about everything (including singularities) without ill-effects and worse, are registered accountants. Analysts have picked up boredom levels well over the level of a lecture on the properties of a brick-hued brick; mathematic levels well over that which is healthy to be subject to (i.e. More than 10 minutes of calculus); biscuit levels far beyond Mr Bourbon could ever imagine...
Capable of a little-seen-before 'SUPER CRITICAL HIT' from a projectile weapon that collapses shield, armour and hull in just 1 visit, this MONSTER of a creature has been known to inhume entire species in its parabolic, cardioid nonsense-field whilst feasting upon the lethal flying banana of a Space Monkey. In all, this is a very dangerous creature indeed - and not to be sensibly poked for more than 1 round, if at all. Watch it.
Kudus are also fond of gardening.
Roaming NPC (doesn't stay in the same area for very long).

Blue Crystal

Yes. It talks Famous saying.
Blue crystals are mildly interesting - but no-one's quite sure why.

Easiest of the crystals but requires Vorpal skills at least, preferably Monkey level.

Green Crystal

green_crystal_x256.png

It doesn't talk. Get over it. Another famous saying.
The Green crystal is actually a breed of llama, completely unrelated to its differently hued cousins. When unaccompanied, these enjoy grazing and... the other things llamas do in their spare time.

Trickier than Blue's, but still doable with Monkey level skills, requires caution.

Red Crystal

red_crystal_x256.png

Yeah, sometimes it talks... sometimes it doesn't. Yet another saying of fame.
The Red crystal, as with all the crystals, came from a concoctional of fruit juice. When you melt one, apparently, you can smell tomatoes. Fancy that.

Look, do you ACTUALLY care if it talks? A saying which is not entirely familier.
The black crystal is said to originate from Turkey. Turkies... Grr... I hate turkies.

Xyzzyl

xyzzyl_x256.png
XYZZYL --Famous last word of Johnny "Goundwire" Fitzsimmons
Not so much a word as a sound. Named Most Attractive Sentient Being by the Terran Academy of Thunderbolts, Johnny "Groundwire" Fitzsimmons was stuck by lightning 15 times before he was finally granted his pilot's license. Finally allowed into space, Fitzsimmons found great popularity among his fellow pilots who frequently invited him on excursions to hunt electromagnetic based life forms. During a solo package run to Orion Prime, "Groundwire" came across a new life form that sent his sensors off the scale. Not one to shy away from a good electrocution, Fitzsimmons attacked and suddenly a legend was born. Well...killed really.
